Help for Polish victims affected by floods and other natural disasters, was always given by Polish Alliance of Canada members. In 1976, money was raised for the flood victims of Śląsk. The flood that afflicted Poland in 1997 mobilized the Polish community in Canada.
Not worn out by propagating actions to help Poles, The Alliancer did not disappoint. Its columns advertised an action that brought unexpected effects. The sum of $29,545 (approximately $56,000 today) were collected and sent to towns that had suffered the most during the flood. Letters of gratitude, which were delivered to the Alliance’s address, were the best evidence of the nobleness of everyone who had supported this action.
Help for countrymen in Poland was not only organized in moments of difficulty for the Polish nation. Every letter requesting help was answered, regardless of its sender, organization or individual alike. Members of Alliance branches could always be counted on; they organized fundraisers and occasional events, whose revenues were often used to buy food, clothing, medications, toys, etc. for packages that were sent to orphanages, hospitals, and the poorest of families.
This form of help continues today, and the Alliance’s members can always be counted on.
