Members of the Polish Alliance of Canada have long supported victims of floods and natural disasters in Poland through fundraising and humanitarian aid. Beyond disaster relief, Alliance members consistently responded to requests for help by organizing events and sending food, clothing, medicine, and other essentials to orphanages, hospitals, and families in need—a tradition of generosity that continues today.

William Kurelek’s Artworks (1980s)
A Gift to Canada from Polish immigrant community
William Kurelek was a celebrated Ukrainian-Canadian painter and author whose work explored immigrant and prairie life. Influenced by the Polish immigrant community and Polish-Canadian history, he created a series of 26 paintings about the experiences of early Polish settlers in Canada. The collection was supported and preserved by the Polish Alliance of Canada and later donated to the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

“Solidarność” – Fundraising & Support (1980s)
On the eve of longed-for freedom
The Polish Alliance of Canada strongly supported Poland’s Solidarity movement in the 1980s through protests, fundraising, aid shipments, and donations to workers and refugees. The organization also helped sponsor and settle over 1,000 Polish refugees in Canada and raised more than $20,000 for Solidarity’s 1989 election campaign, celebrating Poland’s return to freedom and democracy.

Wawel’s Treasures (1940s – 1950s)
Safekeeping and return of Polish National Treasures after the World War II
During World War II, priceless Polish artworks from Wawel Castle were sent to Canada for safekeeping, sparking years of debate over their return to Poland after the war. The Polish Alliance of Canada strongly supported their repatriation through public advocacy and press campaigns, contributing to the treasures’ eventual return to Poland in 1959 and 1961.

“Bread for Poland” (1950s)
Fundraising and charity work during the 1950s
In the 1950s, The Alliancer led major fundraising efforts to support education and healthcare in Poland, including aid for the Lublin Catholic University, medical equipment for hospitals, and support for poor students. Through the Fund to Help Poland, the Polish-Canadian community donated X-ray machines, electrocardiographs, medications, and eventually a cobalt bomb for cancer treatment at the M. Curie-Sklodowska Institute.

World War II Relief Efforts
During World War II, the Polish Alliance of Canada strongly supported the Polish Army and war relief efforts through fundraising, donations, recruitment assistance, and aid packages for soldiers and prisoners. The organization raised large sums for military and medical support, welcomed prominent Polish leaders and military figures in Canada, and later helped Polish veterans and invalids settle into Canadian life.
